Old Film Snapshots

Here are a bundle of images taken from various occasions mostly in Melbourne over the past year and a half that I never got around to doing anything with. They are film, hence it took me forever to develop, scan and then edit these pics. So some of them are 18 months old! Oops!

Austrian-looking chap.

Hanging out on a tram with Mum and Becsie.

Mum spent her whole life in the country. Swore she would never live in the city. As kids, when we did venture into the city and mum was driving, I feared for my life. Now look at her. At one with the city.

Some moments you just gotta click the shutter and catch them. I missed the focus here. Still, I'm glad to have gotten the shot, out of focus, then to have completely missed it.

This pic was taken with a fisheye lomo camera. Noni at Falls Creek. I think she prefers swimming to snowboarding.

This was taken a Wilson's Promontory in Victoria. About 3 hours from Melbourne. The water there is CLEAR. I would love to go back, if it wasn't for all the tourists. Taken with a disposable underwater camera I got form Big W, loaded with Fuji.

Noni doing what she does best. A creek not far from Canberra. I love the harsh light and the rocks, something about it is so...Australian. I miss summer :(

Dead Thistles

How do you take a good landscape photograph? I don't know. But I will tell you this: don't go photographing things that have already been photographed a million times before. Like Uluru, or the three sisters in the blue mountains, or Milla Milla falls, Hopetoun Falls, Crater Lake in Tasmania blah blah.... the list goes on. But if you just must photograph Uluru, again, so you can sell a massive print on your website and win awards and gain international acclaim. Then you had better photograph it in an original way. And I don't mean, just because you processed it in black and white, or there was a rainbow in it, it's unique. Neither of those warrant another photograph. But I guess some people like seeing/photographing the same landscape a million times over, from slightly different angles/light. Also, it sells. What is and isn't a good landscape photo is such a subjective thing. That is my unwarranted two cents.

And here is a picture of some dead thistles. I like thistles. I feel like they are symbolic of so much. They have beautiful flowers, yet are really sharp and thorny. The sap of some thistles is used to remove warts. It is an invasive weed. They are annuals, and are alive for only fleeting moments, then persist in a thorny dead state for the rest of the year. There is much we can learn from thistles...

Saturday Night

Saturday night. Most people are out socializing. Or at least at home, in the warmth, watching a movie, reading a book. But here I am taking photos of a tree out in the middle of the bush. I will admit, the odd thought of a disfigured, murderous half human half demon creature prowling the night did cross my mind, more then once. Creatures aside, it was a peaceful experience, up on a hill, taking photos of the stars in the calm of the night. The city behind me, streets lights glowing, cars driving, people going about their lives. It provides for an interesting perspective, not only of the city, but of the world.

From a quick Google search on my slow internet connection I discovered that there are estimated to be between 50 to 200 billion galaxies in the universe. Each galaxy has around 100 billion stars and 2 billions planets. We live in one galaxy, called the Milky way. So, potentially, the total number of planets out there is 2 billion times 200 billion... I just hurt my brain. We live on one of these planets. Surely there is another one out there with the right conditions, such as atmosphere and temperature, to create the perfect stew for life. The USA launched a space probe into space in 1977, called Voyager (there are actually two of them), it is now some 17 403 258 600 km from earth. Voyager is so far from earth, it is now approaching the outer reaches of the Sun's influence...which I think means it is reaching the edge of our galaxy. These rocket scientists were aware of the likelihood of life existing on another planet. This is from the Voyager website: "Both Voyager spacecrafts carry a greeting to any form of life, should that be encountered. The message is carried by a phonograph record - -a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth." Anyway, that's it for Science Sunday, until next week.

Lillian and James, Our FIrst Time.

Those who know me, know that I (generally) don't talk BS (stress - generally). So when I say I felt honoured to photograph Lillan and James' wedding, I truly mean it. The one thing that will stay with me from this shoot, was the sheer joy of the moment. I guess it hadn't really occurred to me that weddings are such a happy day. Not until Lillian arrived. She was exploding with happiness and laughter. I was taken aback. I will spare you any more emotional drivel, and let the pictures do the talking.

Just Quickly Now...

Here are some pictures taken over the past few months that I finally got around to developing/scanning. They include various fishing/hiking/road trips here and there with various people and animals.

Went for an overnight hike in the Budawangs. The views were incredible, and it was super remote. Slept in a cave out of the rain for the night. I hiked up a hill to check out the Aboriginal Bora ground (above). It's an incredible feeling to be in the middle of freekin no where, surrounded by near pristine wilderness, and then come across this sacred aboriginal site...you should all try it! Pictures from this hike are the two above and below.

Scored an old Minolta 35mm slr and 50mm at a garage sale (above photo and the two below), the photos are at least as good as my Nikon FE and Nikkor 50mm...just saying.

Casino Garden

This was taken on my new Nikon D700 and Nikkor 50mm f1.4. After complaining about DX format DSLRS since I got my first 35mm film SLR almost 2 years ago, I finally pulled my finger out and got an FX format DSLR. It's the best bucks I have ever spent. I still have to pinch myself that I finally have one. In the meantime, I think my old D200 has ruined my eyesight. I have recently discovered that my right eye is somewhat weaker then my left. I am sure it is because of all those years I have had to squint through the tiny view finder of DX format SLRS to see what's in focus.

Before this shoot it had been raining all day. Then as we started taking photos, the rain stopped, and held out until after the shoot. Thanks for that rain god. Rainy, overcast days are easily my favorite conditions to shoot in. The clouds act as a big diffuser to create soft, diffused light, perfect for moody portraits. Better yet, all the foliage was wet and glistening with water. Thanks Nicole for running around in the damp undergrowth for me. Thanks Noshin for the styling, I won't doubt you again.

These are a couple of portraits I did of Melbourne Indie Pop band Buckley Ward on one sunny Melbourne afternoon. Hope everything is going well for you guys, can't wait for some new music, and please come to Canberra!

It's been probably a month since I posted, so merry freekn' Christmas and I wish you a happy new year. My new years resolution: to learn Swedish, go to the gym, do a lot of remote wilderness hikes, and improve my photography immensely. There. It's written down now, so if I don't meet my resolutions, I can't pretend they didn't exist.

I had a crazy dream last night. I moved into a new house and the guy that last lived in it had built a huge thick walled room downstairs to torture people. Unfortunately I didn't get to torture anyone, but I did get to meet Nirrimi Hakanson (one of my photography idols) who lived next door, and was my new friendly neighbour. If any one is wondering, she is kind and has a great presence.

What? As if your dreams are any more normal!

I am currently enjoying respite from Canberra with my family in Melbourne. It's been great, but unseasonably cold. Today is supposed to be 40 degrees, so me and Bec are headed for the beach.

So I have relocated cities, I am now in Canberra. There is nothing familiar in a new place, only your skin and your possessions. It is easy to feel alienated by everyone and everything: the water tastes like asparagus, the clouds are shaped weird, the tar on the roads is a funny colour. EVERYTHING is different, and I am supposed to find a home, and live here, amongst these strange people. Hopefully next post, I have a home, and I will probably sound much more enthusiastic ☺

Roadtrip

Me and Noni went for a roadtrip to East Gippsland, Victoria. We made it from Melbourne all the way to Mallacoota, near NSW, until we gave up and went home...we got sick of the continual rain, it was raining everyday except one. We slept in the back of my wagon, did some hiking and lots of reading in the back of my car.

I mean, it rained EVERYDAY.

These are some massive sand dunes near Point Hicks, Croajingalong National Park. You can see Noni in the bottom left corner for comparison :)

This is the point where Nooni flipped out and ran back to the car - see the instant death, laying and sunbkaing on the path in the bottom right hand corner? (A snake)

I got hassled yesterday by the police for taking a photo in the subway. Ever since 9/11 you need a permit to be able to take photos in subways and airports, and probably a bunch of other places I am not aware of (in Australia). The police were actually pretty reasonable, but they seemed to be stuck on the point that I should be more aware of peoples perception of me taking photos in a subway. Ok, I was taking a photo outside the mens' toilets looking in, still, I don't see why it matters, peoples perceptions of me are the last thing I worry about when Im out and shooting.

Some people are strange. During this shoot, a 40 year old man with a mustache appears from no where and asks if he can take some pictures. I don't think anything of it and say sure. He leaves and is back in 10 minutes with a $15000 camera set up, he walks up beside me and makes him self busy snapping away photos, he then starts to try and direct my shoot by telling the model how to pose and that we had to 'sexy things up'...this happened in all of about 30 seconds, at this stage I politely told him to get off my turf. He left as quickly as he came. Awkward? Strange? Inappropriate? None of these words seem to sum up this experience...

It started out with darkness, then sunshine, then along came a tornado/atomic wind bomb with raindrops like shards of projectile glass. That is my life right now...and it is also how this photoshoot roughly went. The weather was drunk, crazy and unpredictable! Next photoshoot may have to be in a studio indoors. Thank you photo-team! This was my first organised collaboration through ModelMayhem, and the beginning of many to come.

Went for an early and fogy hike on the weekend on the Latrobe river east of Melbourne. Was actually looking for another place but got lost. Turned out ok as this place was pretty cool. I wanted to practice some panographs. It was kind of hard though as I broke my tripod and had to shoot hand-held at very slow shutter speeds, I think this was at 1/13th. This mediocre panograph was probably my best attempt at one, it at least shows how stunning this place was.

Photos from recent hiking and fishing trips in the Victorian mountains.

I uploaded this last photo twice just to see the difference between using blogger to upload photos (first image) and copying and pasting the html of the photo from flickr (the second photo). You can see that the second version is much sharper and has much better colour!

All photos taken with my "new" Nikon D200 :D (it's actually reminding me why I prefer to shoot with film SLRs, oh well....)

Ilford pan f 125

Ilford PanF 125 developed in Rodinal (R09 One Shot) 1:25 for 9.5 mins. Scanned with Espon V200. The results were very washed out, lots of midtones and minimal contrast. I wasn't impressed, I think I just don't like iflord in general. However, I like these shots, after tweaking the contrast in photoshop.

I went to Sweden for a month over Xmas and loved it. But right now I am missing rice pudding for breakfast, Vegemite and toast just doesn't seem to cut it anymore. This is my first attempt at developing my own film! It was fun, but don't think I did it so well, images are grainy and have weird colours, but I like the effect. Scanned with an Epson V200.

I'm currently trying to learn to speak Swedish, anyone wanna help me?

I spent two weeks in India during January of this year. I took 5 rolls of fuji sensia 100, my Nikon FE, 50mm f1.8 and 28mm f2.8. What can I say? It was one hell of an experience. It was my first time in a 3rd world country. Millions of people everywhere staring at you, lots of garbage and pollution and plenty of amazing temples, history and food. Hope you like.

Ilford Pan 400

Here are some frames from my first roll of black and white film. It was a roll of ilford pan 400. I don't really like it, it's not very contrasty, lots of midtone greys. Some of these photos are six months old: it took me a while to find someone to develop the film!

Street Photography (my attempt at)

I've been following some street photography blogs and have been inspired to try my hand at it. So I took my camera to the streets of Melbourne. Only some of my images are in black and white, the rest are in colour. I used Kodak ultra max 400 speed film and I like the results. The colours are more subtle then those produced by fuji superior xtra 400 (the other commonly available cheap film) and skin tones I think are much nicer. Some of the scans were done with a Nikon coolscan IV, the rest were done on a normal scanner with a film attachment. I got sick of editing out dust, hair and scratches so I left them in there. These were all developed at Lab-x in St Kilda, I would reccomend gonig there, they are good and cheap. Previously I had been getting my film developed at BIG-W, but after gettting my film developed professionaly, I will never go back. The biggest difference is the lack of scratches and seccondly, the images are just much sharper.

This last one was a double exsposure. All B&W photos were taken on a roll of ilford delta 3200.

Lady of the Jungle

Some of you might recognize this location from photos in a previous post. Well I loved the setting so much I had to go back to shoot some fashion portraits. I was able to bribe Noshin to model for me with some coffee...she accepted :)

This last one was taken on expired AGFA vista 200, all the rest were taken with a canon 400D and 50mm f1.8mm.

Bindarri National Park Hike...

I went for a hike in Bindarri National Park a week or so ago, it's in the north coast of NSW, Australia. I had to go because the weather was perfect for some moody photography: it was cloudy and raining all day. All photos taken on a Nikon FE with expired AGFA vista 200.

^ Sometimes to take a good photograph you need to isolate your subject...sometimes nature does that part for you.
^Hundreds of tadpoles in hundreds of pools of water alongside the waterfall ^The sun came out in the end...whilst I was in my car on my way home. I had to pull over to snap this beautiful vista

I'll be on a road trip as of Monday. We are heading down to Melbourne, it'll only be a three day long road trip (if all goes as planned) but we are expecting to see some amazing places along the way, such as the blue mountains and Jervis bay. Which reminds me I need to go buy some more film!

Forests on 35mm film

So for the past week or so I have only taken photos on my SLR, the DSLR has taken a back seat. I have no car so I have been riding around on my push bike exploring new places with my trusty nikon strapped over my shoulder. Here are these places. Photos are the best of 4 rolls of expired AGFA vista 100 and 200 asa. I scanned them at pretty low quality, but the scans captured the essence of each shot, albeit a bit blurry.

^ I can't help but feel a whimsy model in a white dress is missing from these shots, particuarly this one.

^ This shot was taken on a day when we had a massive dust storm, it created a really cool effect, as though there was really high pollution.

^ This one again, but a slightly different angle. I love these two shots. The graffitied building stands out, yet sits there so comfortably with its' dark spindly forest friends behind. Find the bush turkey.

Recently, 35mm film, landscapes and the beach...

Here is a selection of my favourite images that I have shot recently. Most are taken with my DSLR but some are also from my SLR. Hope you enjoy :)

^ Practicing with different bokeh effects. Check out some cool techniques here.

^ You should really view this in large (click on the link that says view larger). This is a 4 shot stitch.

^ Taken on 4 year expired AGFA 100 film.

They came out pretty good for film expired by 4 years. I went back to the op-shop that I bought it from to by the rest of it and the shop was having a 50% sale on their already hell-cheap junk. I ended up getting 8 rolls @ $1 each, bargain!

Today I also bought a Nikkor AI f2.8 28mm lens from the local pawn shop. They too were having a sale, 25% of camera gear so i got it for $30 instead of $40. Then later I found a circular polarizing filter and a UV filter screwed together at another op-shop for $2! You never know what you'll find at these places.

Steve Parish Photo Competition

I received an email this morning titled "Congratulations!! You are our winner". ...hmmm...when you get an email with a title like that (bearing such good news and promises) you straight away think SCAM and send it to the trash. Well not this time! Turns out I won the Steve Parish Photo Competiton run by APN Online! For any international readers who are not familiar with Steve Parish, he is only the most famous photographer in Australia who also owns his own successful publishing company.

I only blogged about this photo 3 posts ago (just scroll down). I drove half an hour and waited around for 2 hours in the rain and wind for the perfect light and cloud conditions just to get this shot.

Beau and the flying bed sheet portrait

This is Beau Clarke. He volunteered to be my model for an afternoon. I dont get to take much portrait photography, but I really enjoy it when i do! These frames were taken in the last hour of sunlight which gave the photos a soft and warm light. Instead of going for a silhouette against the sun, I exposed for the face to create a washed out effect. Lens flare, faded colours and vignetting add to the charm.

Recent Stuff

I have relocated states! No longer am I a Queenslander, Im back to being a New South Welshman (or walesman?). Due to the relocation I havent had internet for a while (it wasnt easy) but i have been taking photos. These were all taken with me DSLR.

A little old shed near Bellingen, NSW. I like the colour image the best but still thought the B&W was good.

This is probably my favourite image. I love the contrast of the white branches against the dark foliage of the forest behind it.

Some experimenting with lines and colours here.

B&W or Colour?

Ok the concept here is that the trees are bending over from the scream of the person who has superpowers. Next time I will shoot with a real model and not myself.

This is the best of three films of Fuji Superior 400, these are my first shots with my Nikon FE. They are in no particular order but include shots from Atherton Tablelands and just general dickn' around Tville. Photos scanned at the library, so finger smudges, dust and hair are included for your veiwing pleasure. All photos came out a bit warm so I adjusted levels in photoshop. In general im pretty happy with the performance of the Nikon FE, not bad for a 30 year old camera.

Tville show

The vending machine at the Tville hospital. I love the frozen animation of the stuffed toys, in particular, Homer and Micky. It invites so much imagination, for me at least...:s

Check the moon. Thats no hexagon, it has 7 sides, who knows their geometry? 7 blade aperture bokeh :D Do you get this with digital? Anyway, i like the shot.

Shitty JCU library

This was taken with a mates Nikon 100 mm macro lens. I had an aperture of f1.8, i should've stopped it down for more depth of field, ill never learn.
I had my defence of my thesis today, it was painful! I have to make some changes before it goes to print, to bad i lost my USB stick with my final version of it...:S

Why does blogger post photos in the reverse of the order that you post them? Anyways, me, Noshin and Cal went for a spontaneous roadtrip to the Atherton Tablelands for the weekend. They are a bunch of towns in the mountains behind Cairns. Lots of waterfalls, cows and world heritage listed rainforest. Because of the elevation, it was much colder at night then in Townsville so we froze our arses off!!! The forest was beautiful, so were the waterfalls, the vegetation is so dense and full of life. It is incredible.

Australian tropical forests only make up a small percentage of the continent's surface, but contain the majority of Australia's plant and animal species. Climate change threatens to cause many extinctions in this area. The world would be a much sadder place without this amazing little patch of biodiversity :(

Tully Camp

Here are some images from my weekend camping and hiking with Noshin. We went to Tully which is about 2 and a half hours north of Tville and has the highest rainfall in Australia. You could tell becasue this place was luscious and green.

Dave and Meryn came up from Mackay the weekend just passed. They brought up their boat and we went and fished the Hinchinbrook Channel, about 2 hours north of T'ville. Hinchinbrook Island is a big island just of the coast, there are a lot of other small surrounding islands as well. The Hinchinbrook channel passes between the mainland and the island. I didn't catch anything, but Dave did. The weather was perfect, no wind, calm seas, clear skies and clearer water. We stopped at Wallaman Falls on the way back, the highest permanent single drop waterfall in Australia, 268 metres.

Moon Baby

I have never tried shooting the moon before. When I did, I found it was highly over exposed in all my shots. So to get any detail i had to shoot at high speeds and small apertures. I cut and pasted a better exposed moon over the top of the crappy one in this scene and increased its size.

I think this is a cocky apple tree, in which case i want to come back and photograph it when it is in full blossom. When in blossom it has a bunch of bright yellow flowers and all the leaves are dropped. Could make a nice pic in colour. Also, the flowers area edible.

Study Break

Needed a break from the thesis. I have been doing some research (i.e. spying on ppls online webpages) and have discovered some unique places to go hiking. This particular place is only 30 mins drive from Townsville. So i managed to get out of bed at around 9, clear sky, took me leaky squeaky car for a drive. I pulled up where the creek crossed the road and walked up through ppls properties, chest high grass, avoiding farmers driving around on quad bikes. By the time i reached the creek, an hour had passed and I had acquired a small army of insects swarming around my face. So with my new companionship, we began the 3 hour ascent up the creek. Plenty of spiders, snakes, feral pigs, waterfalls, crystal clear pools, big old trees, flowers, butterflys, centrepeeds, turtles, fish and sun. Once I got to the top, there was a colossal water fall and rock escarpment (third last photo), where I went for a swim in the pool of eternal youth (i gave it that name, 2nd last photo). Elevation was about 250m. It was a fun day had by all. The best places are the ones no body else knows about.
